Cart Work

This morning Dan and I arrived at the Plaza Independencia for some hours of cart witnessing. I was happy to meet Tom Byrnes who had already set up the cart. The work consists of waiting for interested people to look over the publications available for free then discussing a little with them. In the three and a half hours I spent there we had about six visits to the cart, some lasting five minutes, some twenty, some visits by one person only, others by a group.
As you may be able to discern in the photo below, the literature display was set up not far from the doors of a Catholic church, a circumstance that would have elicited stern comment, to say the very least, in years past. Tom, shown above in the brown sweater, was Irish Catholic for most of his life. When his wife became a Witness his exposure to the scriptures began. At one point he was shown Romans 6:7, "For the one who has died has been acquitted from his sin." He recognized right away that this rules out the idea of eternal torment in hell and it proved to be a turning point, moving him to embrace the truth of the Bible.

The photo below shows three Witnesses on a bench ...

From left to right they are (1) an elder in a Spanish congregation whose name I do not recall, (2) my brother Dan, (3) Tom Byrnes. The Spanish brother works at the plaza selling yogurt, although here he is shown taking a break, reading his Bible, and waiting for a Bible student of his to arrive for a study session. The story behind this is interesting and here it is:

University students showed up here one day complete with video camera and commissioned with a school assignment to interview a foreigner. Somehow six-foot-tall, blond, and blue-eyed Dan was suspected of possibly being one and they requested to interview him. Naturally, they were able to speak some English. During these proceedings a man, a street vendor of ice cream, approached asking for something. The students interpreted it to Dan. The man had obtained literature at Dan's cart weeks earlier, recognized there was something of value to it, and was asking if there was anyone who could help him understand more about it.

Dan explained a free Bible study was available for him. The students translated this to the vendor. Appointments were made with the help of the students and Dan arranged for the the Spanish elder in the photo to study with this man. Now the study regularly takes place in Plaza Independencia with Brother Yogurt helping Mr. Ice Cream digest the 'milk' of the Word.

The students also left with literature, most of them choosing the book, "Is There A Creator Who Cares About You?"

Below are a few photos from within the Privada where Dan's home is located ...
